My issue with selfish linking is threefold…
- Firstly, it is a footprint. Google looks at a site with many inbound links and no (or very few outbounds) and immediately gets suspicious. It is a red flag of self promotion and adds a few points to the “How soon shall we send Mr Penguin coming to visit?” tally.
- The second is that where your links are concerned. Creating WEB2.0 sites with a ton of great content that only links back to you is another red flag. Imagine how confusing it is for a search engine to see 4 links on a page and try and work out who created that page and whether it is slef promotional? A much harder task.
- Thirdly, and perhaps the most important. Is that if you are trying to sell something, or convince someone to click a link, then to be really good at that. To get the most sales or clicks you can, thet person is going to need to trust you. If you clim your product is the best thing since sliced bread, and that they really really need it, then show they why. Link to testimonials, people who have suffered from not having whatever it is you are selling. Prove your selling case by linking to none commercial sites that make the point for you. Build that trust and make the sale or conversion.
